Report describes research conducted in the UK, undertaken with women and children using outreach services about their experiences and the role of outreach programmes in help-seeking and support. Outreach service providers and referral agencies were also interviewed about their observations concerning effective service delivery. Study results highlight the barriers and helpful responses identified by women, children and service providers that were demonstrated by key avenues of support including the police, legal services, health, housing, and statutory child protection authorities. Examples of good practice within outreach services are highlighted throughout the report and it is suggested these could be used to evaluate and guide the development of outreach services. Key issues raised by the research include concerns about the safety of women and children negotiating child contact arrangements. Emphasises that, whilst the initial period after leaving a violent relationship is a very difficult and dangerous time, many positive outcomes emerge for women when support is ongoing. Report concludes with recommendations for improving the safety of women and children and the quality of help-seeking responses.en
