Notes:  See a similar fact sheet by Michael Flood on our Research and Resources database, published by the National Council of Single Mothers & Their Children.
This fact sheet looks at the myth that women routinely make false allegations of domestic violence to gain advantage in family law proceedings and use protection orders to remove men from their homes or to deny their ex-partner’s contact with children. It provides the facts supported by research or evidence, to address the myth. The facts include: women living domestic violence often do not take out protection orders and if they do, often it is a last resort; that the risk of domestic violence increases at the time of separation; and protection orders give an effective means of reducing women’s vulnerability to violence. References cited to support the facts or findings are included.
