dc.description.notes | Women who are or have been victimised may suffer physical and psychological consequences that interfere with the health and nurturing development of their children. This US research examines the impact of maternal victimisation on children’s intelligence, behaviour problems and social competence. Mainly African American children, aged 4-6 years from low-income families living in an urban setting, and their mothers and teachers provided the data for the study. Participants were a subset of the LONGSCAN (Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect) sample. Victimised mothers reported more internalising and externalising behaviours in their children than non-victimised mothers. However, the teachers and the children did not share this perception. The mediating effects of maternal nurturance, maternal depression, maternal use of minor violence in disciplining the child and verbal aggression were examined. | en |
