Assesses the utility, in terms of intervention and prevention, of redefining violence against women as a hate crime from a feminist perspective. Provides a brief political and social history of the emergence of the concept of hate crimes and the various definitions it has attracted. Discusses the incidence and prevalence of hate crime and some of the major legal responses which have been developed in the US, highlighting several criticisms directed at these initiatives. Contrasting these developments with those occurring in Australia, it is argued that although there is a need for a recognition of the complex relationship between gender inequality and what we define as hate crime, the concept alone is an inadequate focus for prevention and must be informed by an understanding of dominant social and political discourses and the dynamics of abusive relationships.en
