General Overview: This Canadian article provides a literature review examining violence against women post-separation and risk factors for such violence.<br/ ><br/ >Methods: The article provides a definition of post separation violence and examines research documenting the prevalence of such violence, as well as risks for non-lethal and lethal violence. The analysis uses a “nested ecological framework” to understand risk markers of separation violence. This framework divides the environment in which violence takes place into four levels (the macro-system, the exosystem, the microsystem and ontogenic level) and assigns risk markers to each level:<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: Having identified these four levels and integrating risk markers for post-separation violence to them, the article discusses the difference between risk markers and perpetrator motives for violence. The possible motives identified for post separation violence were: retaliation against the woman for separating, a desire to restore power and control over the woman, and an attempt to force reconciliation.<br/ ><br/ >Conclusions: The article concludes that research consistently shows that many women are in danger of experiencing violence post-separation. It argues that women should be aware of their risk and have access for support for post separation violence prevention. The framework is designed to assist in that process.en
