Notes:  Summarises a research project, which explores how women attending Magistrates' Court in Victoria experience the legal system. The appropriateness and effectiveness of the interaction and support of the staff based at Courts with the survivors of family violence are examined. In-depth interviews and surveys were used to explore the perceptions and opinions of those seeking intervention orders, and many intervention order hearings were observed. Individuals who are central to court-based services were consulted. The findings show that the Courts fail women because of issues arising from the Crimes (Family Violence) Act 1987's inclusion of stalking; issues involving court culture; the discretion of the judiciary; and the failure of the Registrars to respond appropriately to those seeking Intervention Orders. Recommendations addressing these shortcomings are presented.
