This article discusses the development and psychometric properties of the Safe At Home instrument, which evaluates the process of change experienced by individuals who engage in rectifying their abusive behaviour. In order to test factor structure, concurrent validity and predictive validity, more than one thousand men attending batterers’ intervention programmes in the US completed the instrument during intake and at programme completion. It was found that the three-factor scale identified was consistent with the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change. The authors concluded that the Safe At Home instrument is relevant for evaluations of batterers’ programmes.en
