Presents the methodology and results of a US study aimed at comparing the community-based counselling outcomes of physically battered women with women who had been both physically and sexually assaulted by their partners. Research on the incidence and impact of marital rape is summarised and the absence of research into the efficacy of counselling for survivors of physical and sexual battering is highlighted. Results suggest women who have been exposed to both sexual and physical battering are less likely to benefit from counselling-based interventions and the author advocates for greater research into the specific needs of this population.en
