Outlines the methodology and results of a US study exploring the relationship between housing problems, homelessness and separation following incidents of domestic violence. Previous studies suggesting a link between homelessness and domestic violence are discussed and the role of informal support networks, formal support systems, the welfare system, the legal system and services such as women’s crisis shelters is examined. Highlights the need to expand the concept of homelessness to include other forms of housing problems, such as difficulty paying rent and threats of eviction. Concludes that both informal and formal networks of support are essential following domestic violence-related separation and advocates a coordinated ‘whole system’ response to meeting women’s needs.en
