Notes:	Special issue on domestic violence Introduces the debate surrounding whether or not mediation and restorative justice methods should by used in domestic violence situations through examining the pros and cons of the two most established models; the victim offender mediation model and the family group conference model. Describes several other approaches being developed, providing a critique of their utility and effectiveness. Outlines the process used by the Waikato Mediation Services restorative justice programme pilot in Hamilton, New Zealand and the specific protocols developed for dealing with domestic violence situations. Concludes that while the use of restorative justice methods does open up new avenues of opportunity for both victims and offenders, the limitations inherent within such an approach cannot be overlooked. Suggests that in domestic violence situations, restorative justice methods are only appropriate in rare cases and where used, special protocols must be developed to ensure the safety and informed consent of the victim.
