Highlighting the absence of research exploring the specific ways in which partner violence is transmitted or transferred across generations, this article presents the methodology and results of a US study aimed at examining anger expression styles as a potential mediator in the relationship between family violence and subsequent perpetration of dating violence in adolescence. Research and theoretical approaches to anger expression styles is discussed and linked to Bandura’s social learning model. Analysis of the results suggests that gender, and the type of violence to which an individual was exposed during childhood will have an impact on the significance of anger expression style as a mediator but that in general, there is a relationship between the experience of family violence and the likelihood of perpetration of partner violence in adolescence and that this can be explained, to some extent, through the application of social learning theories specifically as they relate to anger expression styles.en
