| dc.description.notes | Also available as an e-journal from Elsevier Science<br/ >Discusses the methodology and findings of a study that examined the role of financial practices in creating tension and conflict in Filipina-Australian marriages. Highlighting the increasing proportion of Filipinas (women from the Philippines) migrating as spouses or fianc?s of Australian men, it is suggested that while money is not the only factor in women's decision to migrate and marry, cultural differences in the management of household finances and contrasting perceptions of gender roles in relation to money can result in marital conflict. Argues the primary sources of such conflict include unrealised financial expectations, issues relating to the remittance of money to extended family members overseas, husband's disapproval of their spouse's participation in the work force, and cultural differences in attitudes towards finance and financial roles in marital relationships. Concludes by asserting a need for pre-migration financial counselling to be integrated into general pre-migration and sponsorship programmes. | en |
