This paper presents the background, implementation and outcomes of Project Magellan. The Project was a pilot programme introduced to two Registries of the Family Court in Victoria, to manage residence and contact disputes where child abuse allegations had been made. As a consequence of its success, the Project became a national programme, except for Western Australia that conducts its own Project Columbus. Some of Project Magellan’s main attributes are: a legal representative for the child; a fixed-time programme; early intervention; use of professional investigators and assessors; and clear information about processes and progress for families. Within the Project scheme, disputes were resolved more quickly, court events fell, children were less distressed, and parents and legal practitioners reported high levels of satisfaction.en
