This paper gives a brief account of the existing responses to domestic violence in Romania. Domestic violence was finally criminalised in 2000, ten years after the abolition of the communist regime. Counselling centres for legal and psychological assistance were established and preventive campaigns launched. However, a lack of police training still hinders victims’ protection. The author, who is a lieutenant in the Police Department of Cluj County in Romania, discusses the future results.en
