Discusses new challenges which are faced by the movement against domestic violence after a quarter century of action. These challenges are discussed within a framework which identifies some of the unintended consequences of activities undertaken to date to address domestic violence, and which explores some of the challenges which arise from the nature of domestic violence. The nature of domestic violence – as at once a personal and a social problem – leads to debates about the level at which attempts to address domestic violence are best directed, these debates often emerging most strongly when interventions with perpetrators are discussed. Examples of challenges arising from the inadvertent consequences of efforts to stop domestic violence and overcome its effects are the stereotyping of women who experience violence, and the stigmatising of young people who are affected by domestic violence by presenting as inevitable, the repetition of the cycle of violence.en
