Seeds of healing from +SHIFT: An antiviolence program for women in Victoria, Australia

Abstract

This article examines +SHIFT, a cost-free antiviolence groupwork and case management program piloted in Victoria, Australia for women who were system-identified as using force in their intimate relationships. The program recognises both the harm endured by women and the harm caused by them, and is grounded in a gender-responsive, trauma-informed and healing-oriented approach.<br><br>Drawing on thematic analysis of 21 interview transcripts, the authors identify four themes in women’s experiences of +SHIFT: program philosophy and curriculum components; co-facilitated group structure, process and interactions; shared peer experiences and peer support; and the connection between curriculum content, life experience and personal accountability. The article argues that the program planted “seeds” for participants’ healing, self-awareness, alternative perspectives and non-violent relationship behaviours.
