| dc.description.notes | Issues and practices in contemporary community corrections are examined. Definitions and understandings of community corrections and how these have progressed over time are offered. Sentencing options are explored, such as contrasting types of supervision programs and correctional orders. Ideologies concerning effective rehabilitation in the community have transformed over the past decade. There is great focus given to 'what works' in criminal justice. The role of community corrections and the obligations to the community are enforced. The philosophy underpinning community corrections is discussed, as well as diversion programs, the nature of probation and intermediate sanctions. 'Scared straight' programs are discussed as well as what is entailed within parole and probation for offenders. The place of restorative justice within the realm of rehabilitation is deliberated. What factors should be targeted within rehabilitation, how programs should be delivered and how to assess responsively are identified. Case studies are provided to demonstrate differing programs to rehabilitate offenders, addressing areas such as anger management, sex offender treatment, cognitive skills domestic violence and substance abuse.
