Notes: | This chapter focuses on crimes within Australian homes including homicide, domestic violence, family violence, child abuse and elder abuse. Responses to crimes in the home across Australia are not uniform as there are marked differences both within and between jurisdictions with regard to different forms of crime within the home. Protection of privacy and legal regulation of family life are addressed, with a discussion on The Stolen Generation. Criminal laws are relied on to deal with domestic violence and some forms of child abuse but less so for elder abuse, which tends to be dealt with through health or community services. Sociological theories for explaining these types of crimes are examined in terms of how violence is transferred from one generation to another, feminist perspectives, and a human rights approach. |
