dc.description.notes | Proceeding from the conference held in July 2002 at Charles Sturt<br/ >University, Wagga Wagga, NSW.<br/ >This chapter looks at NSW legislative provisions and the AVO (Apprehended Violence Order) for legal protection to women in violent relationships. It outlines issues raised by Aboriginal women in 3 rural and remote towns of NSW, and about perceived barriers to obtaining protection through the AVO scheme. It describes disincentives within the AVO processes of initiating action, appearing at court or breaching an order. Effectiveness of legal proceedings and orders is discussed by court-connected processes that enable more effective participation in decision-making and programmes for perpetrators and victims. It also provides a statistical overview and demographics of the rural towns in terms of population, crime and AVOs. | en |
