References: p249-285<br/ >Presents a feminist perspective on approaches and responses to women’s mental health, highlighting the manner in which women’s experience of violence, sexual abuse and distress is often medicalised by health and social service systems. The prevalence of women with a history of abuse within the mental health system is discussed and the inability of existing services to respond to the needs of women from non-English speaking and culturally diverse backgrounds is considered. Central principles guiding feminist practice in the area of mental health, including client empowerment, community development and advocacy, are outlined and some specific mental health issues for women within the criminal justice system are identified. Concludes that, before mental health services can respond appropriately to women’s needs, a shift away from approaches that pathologise their individual experiences is required.en
