Notes:	This chapter explores some of the preconceptions and assumptions inherent within the language used to describe sexual behaviour and sexual violence in legal and social contexts, highlighting the invisibility of same-sex relationships within these discourses. The implications of such invisibility are analysed through the lens of ‘power and pain’ before definitions of sexual violence formulated by participants in the US study are examined. The tendency for women to reconceptualise their experiences as rape or violence over time is identified and the challenge of applying the concept of ‘rape’ to female perpetrated sexual violence is considered. The importance of creating new meanings outside the boundaries of old definitions and concepts through hearing the individual stories of women is emphasised.
