This introductory chapter discusses the evolution of definitions of same-sex violence as a social problem, the prevalence of same-sex abuse and some of the theoretical questions that arise in contrasting same-sex abuse with that occurring between heterosexual couples. The research design and methodology for the US study undertaken by the author are then described. Combining a participatory action research model with feminist analysis, the study conducted explored the experiences of seventy lesbian and bisexual women survivors of sexual violence, through a series of qualitative, open-ended interviews. An overview of the key themes explored in the remaining chapters of the book is also provided.en
