Provides an overview of some of the key sources of risk to children in situations of unsupervised contact with battering parents and presents a guide for practitioners wishing to assess the risk posed to children in these contexts. Written within a US context, the risk assessment is guided primarily by the nature of the batterer's history so that the factors relevant to the assessment will vary according to whether the parent has previously been physically abusive, sexually abusive, psychologically abusive or neglectful, and whether the abuse has been directed at the children or at a spouse. Other factors, such as substance abuse, mental health history and relationship dynamics, are also taken into account and case studies are used to illustrate. Ways of structuring custody and visitation arrangements so as to minimise the risk to both children and abused partners are then suggested.en
