dc.description.notes | Drawing on in-depth interviews conducted with 40 victims of wife rape in the US, this chapter examines the way women define their experiences of rape and how such definitions can impact on women’s decision to terminate a relationship. Some of the reasons women are hesitant to define their experiences of sexual violence as rape are explored and potential factors, either within or external to the relationship that play a role in changing definitions are identified. Escalation in violence or a change in the nature of the violence perpetrated are suggested as important triggers for leaving an abuser. Sources of support and intervention women seek out when leaving an abuser and some of the long-term physical, emotional and psychological effects of wife rape are discussed in the final part of the chapter. | en |
