Notes: | In this introduction to "Violence in Gay and Lesbian Domestic Partnerships", Elliott dispels the myth that such relationships are less violent than those between heterosexual partners. Statistics from the US are presented to illustrate the extent of the problem and explanation is given to define gay and lesbian violence and show that it is about power rather than gender. The reluctance of the battered women's movement to address same-sex domestic violence originates in the homophobia within the programmes which deal with domestic violence and persists within the gay and lesbian community which seeks to remove it as an issue which might be used against the community. It is suggested that the solution to same-sex domestic violence will come about through cooperation between the battered women's movement and the gay community as well as through the development of new theories on causes of domestic violence and new service models which would bridge the two groups. |
