This chapter explores the various approaches that human rights advocates have taken to violence against women, in particular the feminist critique of the 'public/private dichotomy' and reviews the achievements, thus far, of the women's human rights movement internationally. Some of the limitations of the human rights approach and current development approaches to violence against women are then discussed and the need for a more integrated response, that recognises not only the impact, but also the causes, of gender violence, is advocated. The chapter concludes by summarising some of the implications this new approach has for the work conducted by international development organisations.en
