Describes the key features of youth justice and care and protection family group conferencing as they have been developed in New Zealand, utilising case studies to illustrate the various stages, benefits and disadvantages of each. Several evaluations of care and protection family group conference programmes are reviewed and the perceived advantages and potential risks associated with its implementation are identified. The primary concerns raised in relation to the application of restorative justice models to situations of family violence involving children are then addressed under the headings of power imbalances, safety and trivialisation of abuse. Concludes that most of the potential risks can be avoided through good practice and continual evaluation.en
