In this chapter, the author provides a brief history of her own experience in family violence and restorative justice work, before presenting an overview of the debate surrounding the applicability of restorative justice models to domestic and family violence. Identifying the core principles of restorative justice approaches as mutual responsibility and interdependence, the benefits of a collective, as opposed to individual, response to gendered violence are highlighted, and the capacity of restorative justice models to engage the conscience of a community, rather than simply impose a legal authority, is emphasised. Argues that due to the complexity of family violence situations, compared to other forms of crime, if restorative justice models are to be effective, particular guidelines must be developed. An example of a project developed in the US is used to illustrate the potential of such an approach, and ways of resolving uncertainties are suggested.en
