dc.description.notes | Discusses some of the challenges facing gender-based domestic violence theory as a result of increasing recognition of the incidence and prevalence of same-sex domestic violence. Written from a US context, article provides a background to the feminist socio-political model, which arose out of the social and historical context of the women's movement, and sees patriarchy, sexism and misogyny as the source of domestic violence. Contrasts this with the more recently developed psychological theories that deny domestic violence is a gender-based issue, arguing that it is a condition which requires behavioural and psychological treatment. The author suggests that neither model is capable of explaining the phenomenon of domestic violence in its entirety and advocates for the integration of social and psychological theories. A critique of such an integrative model and suggestions for further study are then provided. | en |
