Co-published simultaneously in Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment & Trauma:Vol. 4. No. 1, 2000, pp. 83-114.<br/ >Reviews the design, implementation and results of six U.S. “police arrest studies” aimed at ascertaining the deterrent effectiveness of arrest for domestic violence offences and highlights some of the problems associated with the use of inconsistent methods and analysis amongst them. Outlines the methodology and results of a re-analysis of the findings of five of these studies, implemented in an attempt to counter some of these problems. Argues that the available research is insufficient to assess the effectiveness of arrest as a deterrent to spousal/intimate partner assault, suggesting a continuance of rigorous research in this area is critical to the resolution of debate surrounding the appropriate societal response to domestic violence.en
