Describes the Family Safety Program developed by Relationships Australia, NSW which targets all areas of family violence. Provides a detailed account of the programme aspects which address men’s violence towards women and children. The development of the agency’s work with women is described and the principles and approach detailed. Explores the debate about the provision of counselling services for male perpetrators of violence, outlines the agency’s considerations in developing such services, and describes the guidelines underpinning services for men. Provides data on initial follow up to ascertain the effectiveness of the intervention with perpetrators. Also describes the debate about the use of couple therapy where there is violence, and the approach taken. Briefly overviews the agency’s children’s programme. Concludes that developing and offering services such as these requires an agency to attend to issues of accountability, staff and client safety, specialist staff training, and a preparedness to participate in the broader community debate.
