dc.description.notes | Originally published in The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Family Therapy 1996, vol.17, no.3, 121-125.<br/ >Explores the commonly made claim that men are the ‘hidden’ victims of domestic violence. Finds that women can be violent within relationships. Reviews the research and concludes that women’s violence is qualitatively different to men’s violence, and differs in intent, severity and outcome. Goes on to look at the practice implications, including the need for the therapist to distinguish between two possibilities in assessing the nature of a women’s violence, and the appropriate responses to each. Concludes that women can be violent and this reality needs to be acknowledged, but that this should not obscure the fact that more women are victims of men’s severe and repeated violence, and are therefore at greater risk. | en |
