Prepared by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner for the Attorney General in accordance with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act 1986, Chapter 5 of this report explores Indigenous perspectives on family violence, its prevalence in Indigenous communities and the adequacy of existing government responses to the issue. Commonwealth, ATSIC, State and Territory initiatives are reviewed and key challenges for future policy and service delivery are identified. The need for more coordinated and holistic approaches to family violence and improved access to services for Indigenous women is highlighted and the importance of supporting community justice initiatives considered.
