dc.description.notes | "March 2000"<br/ >Examines procedural aspects of the legal and criminal justice system that affect the operation of the Criminal Code and its impact on the lives of women, in particular victims of domestic, sexual and family violence, making recommendations for reform in a number of areas. Specific issues associated with access to the legal system in rural and remote communities, bail, police procedures in sexual offence cases and police responses to domestic violence are addressed and the need for more integrated and coordinated approaches to domestic and sexual violence is considered. Examples of current initiatives aimed at improving community responses to domestic and other forms of violence in Queensland are provided and the use of restorative justice and victim offender mediation in family violence contexts is critiqued. Support and services available to victims under the Criminal Offence Victims Act 1995 (Qld) and the principles underlying the legislation are described and some of the problems identified by the Taskforce with implementation of the scheme are highlighted. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of courtroom design and the importance of acknowledging the needs of complainants and victims in these contexts. | en |
