Justice most often remains elusive for women who have experienced violence and abuse. In the majority of cases, victims do not contact police or seek justice through the courts, making it imperative that new justice seeking methods are developed to help produce better outcomes for victim and perpetrators of violence. This book explores restorative justice methods being trialled in Australia, Canada, the US and New Zealand, informal and dialogue-based methods of reconciliation that decreasing the role of the state in responding to the crime and increase the role of communities in meeting the needs of victims and offenders. While such processes cannot be applied in instances of sexual assault, domestic violence and child sexual abuse, they have growing support for other crimes, particularly those involving young offenders. This book considers the benefits and concerns of restorative justice processes, with both proponents and opponents of restorative justice practices contributing to a debate on alternative approaches the criminal trial (inside cover blurb, edited).
