This book is the outcome of research undertaken into violence against Filipino women in Australia. The authors discuss not only their research methodology, but also migration patterns into Australia and the large numbers of Filipino women who come to Australia as marriage partners for Australian men. They discuss the motivations of the male sponsors who for the most part are seeking genuine relationships with their new partners. They note the high potential for exploitation that exists in such relationships. Chapter 3, titled ‘Violence against Filipino Women in Australia’ (which is held by the Clearinghouse), explores the high numbers of homicides among these women. It also examines domestic violence in this context, ands the obstacles to women’s full protection and support. The legal system’s response to this violence is also highlighted. Case studies of homicides are presented and issues arising from these homicides are explored to some depth. The final section analyses representations of Filipino women and the role of masculinity, fantasy and violence in such representations.
