Qualitative research conducted from September 1995 to March 1996 which was directed at female victims of domestic violence from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) living in Australia. The purpose of the study was to improve the services accessed by NESB women. The research describes the impediments and efficiencies encountered by the twenty-one women interviewed when looking for assistance in government and non-government agencies. Similarly, thirteen service providers explain the obstacles that the agencies face. The types of abuse experienced and their consequences, and the victims’ views on and responses to domestic violence, are also documented. The resulting recommendations focus on the special needs of this group, and also point out general deficiencies of the service.en
