General Overview: This fact sheet presents data regarding the criminal justice response to sexual assault and related offences, indicating an extremely high rate of attrition in cases from first report to final court outcome.

Discussion: This fact sheet examines the probability of a guilty decision in cases of sexual assault and similar offences as logged by police across Australia in 2006. The fact sheet draws on data from over 18,000 incidents of sexual assault and related offences to estimate the likelihood of various outcomes which may result from the initial reporting. A diagrammatic flowchart follows the course taken by victims’ cases from initial reporting to police; to criminal proceedings begun by police; to cases going to court resulting in a guilty outcome.
