Notes: | Discusses the operation of the Family Law Act 1975 in the context of allegations of family violence and/or child abuse and the related role of Child Protection Agencies in intervening where a child is at risk of abuse. The State/Federal jurisdiction distinction between these bodies is noted and it is argued this has led to a lack of coordination and integration of Family Court and Child Protection services, to the disadvantage of families and children. An outline of the Magellan Project, a Victorian initiative aimed at addressing some of these issues, is provided and an example of a case in which communication between the Family Court and Child Protection services was essential is used to illustrate the value of the pilot programme. |
