dc.description.notes | Catalogue number: 85-561-MIE2003002<br/ >Commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics and the National Crime Prevention Centre at the Canadian Department of Justice, this report presents and examines the findings of a study aimed at exploring both the short- and long-term consequences of witnessing violence in the home, with specific emphasis on the role of such experiences in the development of aggressive childhood behaviours. Other factors thought to influence childhood aggression, such as parenting practices, social support, emotional health and socio-demographics were also examined. The findings suggest that while witnessing domestic violence may increase the risk of childhood aggression, it does not necessarily cause it and it is argued that a range of factors must be considered in developing intervention and prevention strategies. The limitations of the study and directions for future research are also addressed. | en |
