Notes:	See also "Predicting women's responses to violence : the 1996 Women's Safety Survey" in our Research & Resources database The first in a two-part series, this paper provides a background to the development, implementation and findings of the ABS Women's Safety Survey. It highlights limitations of that study with respect to the identification of risk factors for violence, before presenting the aims and methodology of this new study directed at isolating specific predictor variables and their relationship to particular types of violence. Utilising a multivariate analysis technique, the researchers developed a formula for calculating the probability of victimisation of a woman based on significant risk factors. Key multivariate predictors are discussed and some of the implications of the research identified.
