dc.description.notes | "Has also been published as Journal of gay & lesbian social services, volume 4, number 1, 1996"--T.p. verso.<br/ >Reports and discusses the findings of a US qualitative research study which examined the incidence of self abusive and/or addictive behaviours and intergenerational abuse in 288 gay and lesbian clients of a mental health service, screened and referred for domestic violence perpetrator treatment, over a six year period. Analysis of the results revealed a high incidence of both addictive/self abusive behaviours involving drugs, alcohol, food and sex and personal histories of physical and sexual abuse. All of the participants reported having been psychologically abused as children. Although the author acknowledges that the context of the study may have influenced the results and that addictive behaviours should not be perceived as the cause of domestic violence, it is suggested that same-sex domestic violence is a relatively new area of research and that this study, as the first of its kind, might provide a 'baseline' for the development of further studies | en |
