This article examines how child protection services can respond to families with complex problems, to better benefit the safety and well being of children. The authors examine the impacts of parental substance abuse, domestic violence, and parental mental health problems on parents, parenting behaviour and children. The authors explore co-occurrence and the experiences of social-exclusion and trauma among families with complex needs, and outline practice considerations addressing assessment, intervention strategies, parenting interventions, the parent-child relationship, responding to adult trauma, early intervention and integrated responses.<br/ >[Appended From Merge Migration]<br/ >Families with multiple and complex problems are no longer a marginal group in service delivery. In fact, they have become the primary client group of modern child protection services. The challenge for child protection services is to respond holistically to address inter-related problems, in order to better support families to make and sustain changes to better meet the needs of children.en
