Notes: | This Australian research summary highlights the need for greater emphasis on developing an in-depth understanding of the concept of ‘false allegations’ and subsequent implications on social policy and the criminal justice system. The authors assert there has been a preoccupation with determining prevalence rates of false sexual assault allegations and, without a common definition of what constitutes a false allegation, establishing accurate prevalence rates is very difficult. Finally, the summary stresses the importance of considering the context within which false allegations are made. Examples of this are culture, gender roles, and personal and/or social beliefs around sexual assault, including perceptions of service responses and barriers to reporting sexual assault. |
