General Overview: This international report reviews the progress that has been made in violence prevention since 2002, and sets out goals for the World Health Organisation (WHO) and its partners for the next five years.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: The report briefly describes the incidence and consequences of violence and provides examples of violence prevention programs. Many member countries have appointed health ministry focal persons for the prevention of violence and have produced national reports on violence and health. The report notes that while interagency collaboration is difficult, the potential gains are worth the effort. It calls for rigorous methodological guidelines for estimating the economic impacts of violence. More than 600 violence prevention programs in seven countries were reviewed but most were not designed systematically or properly evaluated.<br/ ><br/ >In the report, the WHO commits itself to implementing certain recommendations, advocating for a science-based approach to violence prevention and providing guidance to member countries on data collection, risk factor identification, evaluation, policy making and programming. It calls on governments to take a lead role in violence prevention and discusses the role of development agencies, non-governmental organisations, United Nations agencies and research institutions in this work.en
