Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at examining the extent to which adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as abuse and neglect, co-occur and the manner in which these ACEs interact. A background to research into the long-term sequelae of childhood maltreatment is provided and it is noted that few studies have focused specifically on the negative consequences of co-occurring traumatic or stressful experiences. Findings suggest that, where participants reported a single form of ACE, they were likely to have suffered multiple forms. Some implications the findings have for future research and screening are also identified.en
