The definition of ‘battered woman’ has changed as a result of societal changes in Israel. Previously seen as a private issue, family violence is slowly being recognised as a public issue. This study examines the contact between police and women making complaints against violent partners, and reports on the women’s own experiences. Review of literature outlines how women cope with violence in the family, their contact with Israeli law enforcement systems, and police attitudes in relation to domestic violence. Data collection, from a sample of 90 women, involved the completion of questionnaires which concentrated on their experiences of seeking police assistance. Provides quantitative results of the women’s encounters with police, reasons for making a complaint, and the women’s autonomy. Qualitative data gathered women’s perceptions of their contact with police.en
