When assessing elder women, psychologists generally do not consider experiences of domestic violence. Similarly, studies which focus on these women are scarce. Nevertheless, older women who survived domestic violence are also affected by previous abuse and require special attention. This paper addresses the incidence and consequences of prior domestic and child abuse in older women in the US. Data were obtained from outpatient mental heath clients of two clinics in California. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the complexity and repercussions of the abuse. The authors suggest a sequelae in older women divided into development of self, development of relationships, mental health, health status and economic realities. Clinical and practical implications are also discussed.en
