Presents a background to, and a theoretical framework for, the development of the Domestic Violence Survivor Assessment (DVSA), a research tool designed to guide interventions and measure outcomes in women seeking to resolve and/or end abusive relationships and assesses the value of the tool with respect to future intervention strategies. Research supporting the theoretical framework, derived primarily from Landenburger’s theory of entrapment and recovery, is outlined and the process through which the DVSA was developed and evaluated is described. The preliminary findings of the evaluation are discussed and suggestions for appropriate use of the DVSA in a variety of counselling situations are provided, including situations where domestic violence survivors desire to preserve their relationship, preserve their self or preserve their resolution of change. Advocates empowerment and choice as the ultimate goal in any practice intervention.en
