dc.description.notes | Summarises the findings of The Australian Institute of Family Studies inquiry (commissioned by the Office of the Status of Women) into the frequency of spousal violence among couples whose marriages have ended, and the post-separation economic consequence of this violence, including the impact on property settlements. A national random telephone survey (excluding Western Australia) of 398 women and men who separated after January 1988 was conducted. Findings are divided into three categories: incidence of spousal violence during marriage and/or after separation/divorce; correlation between spousal violence and property settlement; relationship between spousal violence, post divorce financial living standards and workforce participation. Analysis concludes that spousal violence plays an integral role in property settlement, and a commonality of violence amongst those who divorce is evident. Advocates that the inclusion of spousal violence as a relevant factor for consideration in the division of matrimonial property is essential to the formal acknowledgement of the effects and outcomes of spousal violence. | en |
